“In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of Holy Motherhood.”
An anti-idyllic, rural scene: In her youth, the protagonist bonds with a pack of unruly misfits who are neither able nor willing to conform to society. They dance among the carcasses of the slaughterhouse, smash the handed-down wealth of previous generations to pieces, and live their lives barely scraping by. Bodies full of rage at human existence. One goes to the battlefield of birth alone. Those who survive are forced to wear the costume of a mother who never sleeps. Those who suffer, live. But the struggle with one’s origins never ends.
The title Fretten* arises from her family vocabulary of rage and vituperation. Helena Adler is the author-undertaker who lays her present to rest. She lashes out against the inarticulateness of those forever stuck behind the times. In their new piece, makemake produktionen use voices, hand signs, bodies, and a drum set to create a brand-new, egalitarian stage language for Adler’s novel. A story about life in survival.
The new TEATA in der Gumpendorfer will perform this production at Kosmos Theater.
