Sarajevo, 1992: During the siege of the city by the Serb army, the inhabitants try to cope with everyday life. In the middle of all this: 10-year-old Tijan. Together with friends and family he lives through a period of exceptional circumstances that persists so long it becomes the new normal. Between school, disappearing neighbors, and the increasingly ambiguous question as to who is still a friend and who has become a foe, found objects become the only reliable currency.
The Bachmann Prize winner Tijan Sila gives a poetic and at the same time haunting depiction of his childhood between carefreeness and crisis — as a state ends and a long journey begins. To the music of Bosnia-born Jelena Popržan Sara Ostertag stages the award-winning novel as a multilingual journey to the Sarajevo of the 1990s, a place that is much closer to us than we think.
